Question: What on earth is Desktop Theme?
Answer: Basically, Desktop Themes provide a way of changing the way your computer looks and sounds. Depending on how the author programmed the theme many components of your PCs look and feel can be changed to the "Theme". The sounds you hear when you minimize or maximize a window, the default beep, the startup and shutdown screens and sounds, the background picture, the pointers and various desktop icons may also be changed.
To use these themes, you will need either Microsoft PLUS! (An add-on pack for Windows 95) or another utility to display the themes (NOTE: WIN 98 already has a themes installer built in).
How To Install Desktop Themes
First you need to have a zip utility such as Winzip, and a desktop theme program such as MS Plus!, desktop themes, or XTheme Manager.
- Download the desktop theme of your choice.
- If there is a "readme" file included with it - follow the instructions.
- Files may come in two flavours: with "zip" extension (compressed file) or "exe"
(executable - ready to be installed)
- For zip-files: you need to have a zip utility such as Winzip to unzip compressed files - most of the screen savers are "zipped" to cut down on download size.
WinZip allows people to compress files so it doesn't take too much time to download the files.
Compressed files will have extension '.zip' at the end of the file name, i.e. startrektheme.zip
You will need WinZip to 'unzip' (uncompress) the compressed file. You may find it
here . It is free for personal use.
It's not really up to us to decide what files are zipped on not. The authors that submit desktop
ennhancements to our site decide whether to compress their files or not.
- Open up the theme zip file you just downloaded.
- If the path is not set you may need to check and see if there is a readme file and read this to make sure you unzip your files to the correct place.
- Most themes will work after unzipping all the files into c:\program files\plus!\themes\
- For some themes you need to create a folder named the same as the theme title in c:\program files\plus!\themes\ For example: If you download a theme called Star Trek, you have to unzip the theme file probably named startrek.theme into c:\program files\plus!\themes\ and unzip the rest of the files into c:\program files\plus!\themes\Startrek\
- If the theme still doesn't work you may have to make sure your spelling is correct and it is not spelled Startrec. If you are using Ms Plus! desktop themes program then you can open up Ms Plus! and select the theme from the list and then click on pointers, sounds, etc. and then on Visuals if you are missing your wallpaper and then click on wallpaper bitmap and look below where it says File name - this is where your wallpaper file should be to work correctly, so make sure you double check the location and name.
- Open your desktop theme program, select the theme and click on Apply (in some programs this can be Install) desktop theme.
With the exe-files it is really easy - just click or double-click on it and it will self-install.
Question: Ok, so here I have this desktop theme from your site. I installed it, but now I want to delete it/change to another screensaver. How?
Answer: Please refer to the Help with MS Plus!, or contact the person who made the desktop theme.
Question: I am still having trouble with the installation: the file either 'refuses' to install, or doesn't really work the way it should. It just doesn't work.
Answer: There are two things you can do.
First, repeat the download one more time. It so happens, that occasionally the file gets 'corrupted' on its way to you and this prevents installation.
Secondly, if you are sure the download went without a hitch contact the person who created the file you are trying to install. Contact info is available on all preview pages for ALL files that we offer. Just return to the page where you downloaded the file and will find all the contact info there.
If you don't know the where this page is, try searching our site for this desktop theme from Front Page
The author will have a MUCH better answer to any issues related to specific screensavers/themes/skins.
Please note, we have not checked out all these packages and they remain the property of their respective owners. We cannot act as a broker between you and the owners of these programs.
