If you know someone who works as a nurse at a public hospital or private clinic, take time to pat his or her back and tell how grateful you are for having a kind, industrious and patient helper when you were confined due to illness. The International Nurses’ Week is observed all around the world in early May every year to honor the vital contributions that nurses make for the society.
The International Nurses Day has been celebrated annually since 1965 by the International Council of Nurses (ICN). Dorothy Sutherland, an official from the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare proposed to President Dwight D. Eisenhower that he must proclaim a “Nurses’ Day” in 1953 but he did not approve it.
To honor the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale, May 12 was chosen to become the date of Nurses’ Day as it is the anniversary of Nightingale’s birth. Every year, the ICN prepares and distributes kits for the special day. The kits contain public and educational information materials which can be used by nurses anywhere in the world.
The British public sector union UNISON voted to ask the ICN to move the holiday to another date because they believe that Nightingale did not represent modern nursing. This happened in 1999. Nurses are indispensable because they are the bloodline in hospitals - delivering services to patients and aiding the doctors in their duties. Honor them by getting your free International Nurses Day wallpaper and recognizing their vital role in society.
